Knowing This Position is Vital When Treating Anaphylaxis

Updated Guidance from MHRA

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has launched new guidance on the use of adrenaline auto-injectors, including what steps to take in an emergency and updated advice on body positioning.

With over 20% of the UK’s population affected by at least one allergy, adrenaline auto-injectors (AAIs) are an essential healthcare product used for those at risk of anaphylaxis and can save lives.

AAIs in the UK include Epipens or Jext products prescribed for those at risk of anaphylaxis.

According to NHS Digital’s Hospital Episode Statistics, hospital admissions due to allergies and anaphylaxis in England have nearly doubled in the last twenty years, to over 26,000 admissions in 2021-22 (from 13,440 in 2001-02).

Anaphylaxis can be fatal and it can develop suddenly at any age, even to substances that have previously been safe. The steps taken in response can mean the difference between life and death.

Vital Anaphylaxis Information

We've shared the signs of anaphylaxis and the importance of administering an auto-adrenaline injector (AAI) without delay and calling the emergency services immediately. But what position should you put the patient in until help arrives?

PLEASE SHARE THIS INFORMATION :

It is recommended that...

  • The patient should lie flat on their back, with their 𝗟𝗘𝗚𝗦 𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗩𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗗 where possible (such as on a chair or cushion).

  • Avoid any 𝗦𝗨𝗗𝗗𝗘𝗡 changes in their posture - this is extremely important.

  • The patient 𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗡𝗢𝗧 be allowed to walk around, stand up or sit in a chair, even if they start to feel better.

  • If they struggle to breathe, they can sit up, but only for as long as possible.

  • If they are pregnant, they should lie on their left side.

Why is it recommended to elevate the legs?

During anaphylaxis, having both legs raised enables much-needed blood to flow back to the heart and vital organs where it is most needed.

In November 2021 the Government's 'Adrenaline Auto-injector Expert Working Group' recommended that pictures and training videos should be used to ensure awareness of the importance of the correct posture during Anaphylaxis.

  • Have you been shown the correct posture for anaphylaxis diagrams or videos by your healthcare/medical professionals?

  • Are you aware of the importance of the correct posture for a person experiencing anaphylaxis?
