I Studied Law Because of the Impact Natasha's Death Had on Me.

My name is Rheia. I am twenty-one years old, and a recent law graduate. I have had a severe nut allergy since the age of one and am allergic to several other foods such as to coconut, kiwi, grapefruit, aubergine, and prawns. I also suffer from oral allergy syndrome.

One of the reasons I chose to study Law, was because of the impact that Natasha Ednan-Laperouse’s death had on me. I remember sitting in my living room with my parents when I first heard about her tragic death on the BBC News. I recall turning to my mum who was also tearing up like me, and saying, “That could have so easily been me...”

I knew immediately that I wanted to learn more and get involved in allergen food laws, so I decided that the starting point for my journey would be to study law at university. I have held onto this passion throughout my degree, and I wrote my dissertation on allergen and criminal law.

“I used to feel alone and isolated because of my allergies, as if no one could possibly understand my fears and what I have been through - but that has changed.” - Rheia

I have experienced numerous allergic reactions at university this year, I had 3 anaphylactic reactions which all required EpiPen injections and landed me in A&E. I have also had milder allergic reactions which thankfully didn’t need hospitalization.

But - I have learned not to allow myself to be held back by fear. I did that for so many years, the constant voice in my head wondering when my next allergic reaction would be.

I now have more confidence to handle them and focus on living my best life and not being limited by them.

I graduated in Law and have recently started my Master’s in Medical Law.

I realise that having food allergies has made me so much more resilient and given me great purpose in my life!
